Katsuyama was a post town on the Izumo highway and became Okayama's first designated townscape preservation district in 1985. White plastered storehouses, latticed merchant fronts and a stretch of old road survive, but what the town is actually known for is the noren: in the 1990s a local textile dyer began making indigo-dyed curtains for individual houses and shops, each designed around what the household does or is called, and now around a hundred hang the length of the street.

The effect is that a preserved street reads as inhabited rather than as an exhibit, because the curtains are commissioned by the people behind them and change when a business does.

Katsuyama, Maniwa City. About a short walk from Chugoku-Katsuyama Station on the JR Kishin Line; by car from Ochiai Interchange. Free to walk and open at all hours. Individual shops, the Gozenshu brewery shop and the dye workshop set their own hours and closing days. Free public parking near the preservation district.

**Read the curtains.** Each noren is designed for the household behind it — a comb for a hairdresser, a character from the family name, a tool from the trade. Working them out is the actual activity here. **Almost all of them come from one workshop.** The Hinoki Kusakizome dye studio in the town makes them and is open to visit, which explains the consistency of a street decorated by a hundred separate owners. **Gozenshu has been brewing since 1804.** The shop pours tastings and the brewery is known for reviving bodaimoto, a pre-modern fermentation starter. It sits in the middle of the preserved street. **Twenty minutes end to end.** This is a short street, not a district. Treat it as an hour in Maniwa rather than a day, and pair it with Yubara or Hiruzen. **The riverside behind the street.** A path runs along the Asahi below the town with the old boat landing, and almost nobody walks it.
