Le quartier historique Bikan de Kurashiki conserve un ensemble d'entrepôts (kura) aux murs blancs et toits de tuiles noires de l'époque Edo, alignés le long d'un canal bordé de saules pleureurs. Ces entrepôts, qui servaient autrefois à stocker riz et coton, abritent aujourd'hui musées, galeries d'art, cafés et boutiques d'artisanat.
Le musée d'Art Ohara, première galerie d'art occidental du Japon (1930), expose des œuvres du Greco, de Monet et de Matisse dans un bâtiment néoclassique qui surprend au cœur d'un quartier de samouraïs. Se promener le long du canal au crépuscule, quand les lumières s'allument et que les touristes s'en vont, est l'un des moments les plus sereins d'un voyage au Japon.
