Makino Botanical Garden

**Best sections:** The 'Tosa no Michi' (Tosa Road) is a woodland trail planted with species native to Kochi Prefecture — walking it is like a compressed hike through the Shikoku forest. The 'Makino Memorial Hall' at the garden's entrance displays Makino's botanical illustrations, notebooks, and pressed specimens — his draftsmanship is extraordinary. **Seasonal highlights:** Late March–early April for cherry blossoms (the garden has 15+ varieties, including rare yamazakura). Late April–May for azaleas and wisteria. October–November for autumn foliage and the late-blooming sasanqua camellias (Makino's favorite flower). **Cafe & restaurant:** The on-site 'Makino Cafe' serves botanical-themed desserts (yuzu tart, matcha parfait) and a signature 'plant-based curry' using garden herbs. The outdoor terrace overlooks the valley. Also: the museum shop sells Makino's illustrated botanical prints (¥800 each) — beautiful souvenirs. **Combine with Chikurin-ji Temple:** The garden shares a hillside with Chikurin-ji, the 31st temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The temple is a 10-minute walk downhill and has a five-story pagoda and a beautiful Zen garden. Combined ticket available (¥1,000). **Photography:** Bring a macro lens for flower close-ups. The greenhouse has excellent natural light. The view terrace near the entrance is best at sunset (16:30–17:30 in autumn/winter). **Getting there:** The MY Yasaka bus from Kochi Station runs every 30–60 minutes (¥380 one-way, 15 min). The garden is at the end of the line. Taxis from central Kochi are ¥2,000.
