Temple Mizuma

**Sunrise visits:** The summit faces east over the Chikugo plain. Bring a thermos. The view at 5:30am with no other visitors is one of Fukuoka's most underrated experiences. **Persimmon season:** September–November, the orchards on the approach road are heavy with hoshigaki (dried persimmon) hanging from farmhouse eaves — a sight that distills rural Japan into a single scene. **Adjacent trails:** A 3-km loop trail connects Mizuma-dera with the neighboring Yakubushin Shrine and a small waterfall grove. The unmarked path begins at the right side of the temple entrance gate. **Seasonal festivals:** March 3 (Hinamatsuri) sees the temple decorated with traditional dolls — a quiet local celebration that has no entry in any travel guide.
