Nada (灘) is Japan's largest sake-producing region, historically known as the 'Five Villages' (灘五郷) where over 30 breweries line the coast between Kobe and Nishinomiya. The area's Miyamizu water (宮水, mineral-rich well water), Yamada Nishiki rice, and cold winters create ideal sake brewing conditions. Nada produces 25% of Japan's premium sake, including famous brands like Hakutsuru, Kikumasamune, and Kenbishi.

Many breweries offer tours and tastings — walk through traditional wooden structures, observe fermentation tanks, learn the koji-making process, and sample different sake grades (junmai, ginjo, daiginjo). The Sake Museum and on-site shops allow purchasing limited-edition local brews unavailable outside the region.

However, tasting quality is consistent year-round, and summer's lower crowds may offset the lack of active brewing scenes. **Hidden gem brewery:** Sawanotsuru Sake Museum (沢の鶴資料館, 10-min walk from Oishi Station, free entry) is less touristy than Hakutsuru but equally informative. The museum displays Edo-period brewing tools and has excellent English signage. Their tasting bar offers 10+ varieties (¥100–200 per pour), allowing custom tasting flights. The attached shop sells brewery-only limited editions.
