Shinkyo

**Photography spots:** The classic shot is from the downstream (west) riverbank — this angle shows the bridge's full arc with forested mountains behind. Arrive early morning (7:00–8:00am) for soft light and no crowds. Autumn (late October) brings peak foliage; the bridge appears to float in a sea of red and gold. Spring (early May) offers vibrant green and clearer skies. **Crossing experience:** Paying ¥300 to walk the bridge gives you 10 minutes on the structure. It is narrow (4m wide), steeply arched, and slightly bouncy (wooden construction). The view from the center looks upstream to mountains and downstream to the river gorge. Worth doing once for perspective, but the view from the riverbank is actually superior for photos. **Historical context:** The original bridge, built in 1636, was reconstructed using the same plans in 1907 after the 1902 flood destroyed it. The wood is Japanese cypress (hinoki), lacquered vermilion (shu-urushi). The bridge is considered a 'shinkyō' (sacred bridge), a physical and spiritual threshold between the mundane world and the sacred precinct of the shrines. **Combine with:** After viewing/crossing Shinkyo, walk 5 minutes upstream to the Nikko Kanaya Hotel (established 1873), Japan's oldest Western-style resort hotel. The lobby, restaurant, and gardens are open to non-guests — have coffee or lunch in Meiji-era opulence. **Alternative view:** Walk to the east bank (cross the modern road bridge, then descend to the river path) for a less-photographed angle looking back at Shinkyo with the Daiya River rapids in the foreground.
