**Equinox sunrise:** March 20 (spring equinox) and September 23 (autumn equinox) are peak pilgrimage days when the sun rises directly through the offshore torii gate. The phenomenon occurs ±3 days around these dates but is most perfect on the equinox itself. Arrive 1 hour before sunrise; expect 100+ photographers on equinox day. **Regular sunrise timing:** Even on non-equinox days, the sunrise over the ocean from the shrine is spectacular. Summer sunrises (5:00–5:30am) are earliest and see golden light. Winter sunrises (7:00–7:30am) allow sleeping in and often have clearer skies. Bring jacket — the coastal wind is cold at dawn. **Tide timing:** High tide makes the torii gate more dramatic — waves crash against its base, creating spray. Low tide exposes more rock, reducing the 'gate in water' effect. Combine sunrise timing with high tide for optimal conditions (check tide tables).
