Kodo is the world's premier taiko drumming ensemble, based permanently on Sado Island since 1981. The group's training compound and performance hall occupy a former elementary school in the mountain village of Ogi, where members live communally and practice traditional Japanese percussion arts year-round. Kodo's annual Earth Celebration festival (mid-August, 3 days) transforms Sado into a global percussion gathering — international artists perform alongside Kodo in outdoor stages overlooking the Sea of Japan, while master classes in taiko, shakuhachi flute, and folk dance occur in village shrines and community halls.

Beyond the festival, Kodo maintains a year-round workshop facility offering one-day taiko experiences (¥8,000) and week-long intensive programs. The experience of playing a 400kg o-daiko (great drum) in a wooden hall designed for acoustic resonance creates a physical sensation unlike any other musical instrument — the vibration travels through the floor and chest cavity simultaneously.
