Matsuba Crab Auction — location in Préfecture de Tottori, Sakaiminato

Préfecture de Tottori · Sakaiminato

35.5406°N, 133.2331°E

Sakaiminato Port is one of Japan's premier fishing harbors and the epicenter of Tottori's matsuba crab industry. Every morning from November to March, the port's wholesale market conducts crab auctions starting at 6:00am — fishing boats return from overnight deep-water trawls, crabs are sorted by size and quality, and professional buyers from across western Japan bid on the catch. The auctions are fast, loud, and conducted entirely in regional dialect and hand signals. Visitors can observe from designated viewing areas, witnessing the beginning of the supply chain that ends at high-end restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto.

After the auction, the adjacent fish market opens to the public (8:00am) selling fresh seafood directly from morning catches — matsuba crab (in season), red snow crab, squid, flatfish, and Sea of Japan mackerel. The market also includes a sushi restaurant row where chefs prepare nigiri from fish purchased minutes earlier. Watching the auction followed by eating ultra-fresh seafood creates a complete ocean-to-plate experience rarely accessible to tourists.

Comment s'y rendre

Informations d'accès

Sakaiminato Fish Market Center (境港水産物直売センター). Auction viewing: 6:00–7:30am (November–March, matsuba crab season). Free to observe auction from visitor gallery. Near Sakaiminato Station or by taxi (¥800).

Guide d'initié

**Auction viewing logistics:** Arrive by 5:50am to enter the visitor gallery (2nd floor of the market building). No reservation needed but space is limited (50 people maximum). The auction hall below is visible through large windows. Bring a camera with good low-light performance — the hall is dimly lit. The auctioneer's chant is rapid-fire and difficult to follow even for Japanese speakers, but the hand signals and competitive energy are universally comprehensible. Auctions last 60–90 minutes. Dress warmly — the building is unheated. **Post-auction market strategy:** Head directly to the live crab tanks where vendors sell whole matsuba crabs (¥4,000–10,000 depending on size and grade). The crabs are tagged with boat numbers and catch dates. If you point to a crab, the vendor will weigh it, quote a price, and if you agree, immediately steam it for you (¥500 extra, 20-minute wait). Eat it at the market's outdoor tables with provided crab crackers. **Sushi breakfast:** Order the 'omakase nigiri set' (おまかせ握りセット, ¥2,500–3,500) — the chef selects the day's best fish from the morning catch and prepares 10–12 pieces of nigiri. Typical inclusions: fatty tuna (when available), local flounder, sweet shrimp, sea urchin, mackerel, and squid. The rice is seasoned with red vinegar in Edomae style. Quality rivals Tokyo's Tsukiji at a fraction of the price. **Red snow crab alternative:** If visiting outside matsuba crab season (November–March), the red snow crab (benizuwai-gani, 紅ズワイガニ) is available September–May. It's smaller and less expensive (¥2,000–3,500 per crab) with slightly sweeter meat. The market will steam it on the spot. Excellent value for travelers on a budget. **Combine with Mizuki Shigeru Road:** Sakaiminato Station is the starting point for the Mizuki Shigeru Road (see separate entry). The logical itinerary: predawn auction viewing (6:00–7:30), market breakfast (8:00–9:30), then walk to the yokai street for mid-morning exploration.
