Shinsaibashi-suji (心斎橋筋商店街) is Osaka's premier shopping arcade — a 600-meter covered pedestrian street lined with 180+ shops ranging from international fashion brands (Zara, H&M, Uniqlo) to traditional kimono shops, cosmetics, souvenirs, and department stores. The arcade dates to 1634 when it served as Osaka's main commercial district, and it maintains that role today with 60,000+ daily foot traffic.

The southern end connects directly to Dotonbori, creating a shopping-to-dining progression. The arcade's covered roof makes it all-weather shopping — crucial during Osaka's humid summers and rainy seasons. For best selection, start at north end and work south, finishing at Dotonbori for dinner. **Daimaru Shinsaibashi:** The department store (opened 1726, current building 1933) occupies the north end. The basement food floor (depachika, デパ地下) sells premium foods — wagyu beef, fresh seafood, artisan sweets, imported delicacies. The presentation is immaculate with samples offered freely. Browse even without purchasing; the display is art form. Prices are 20–50% higher than regular supermarkets but quality is exceptional. **Side alleys:** The parallel streets east and west of the main arcade (called yokocho, 横丁) contain independent boutiques, vintage shops, cafes, and bars. These alleys have more character than the main arcade's chain stores. Explore Nagahori-dori's side streets for vintage clothing (American Mura spillover) or Soemon-cho's restaurant alleys for pre-dinner drinks.
