Sumiyoshi Shrine predates written Japanese history — established, according to shrine records, in 211 AD to honor the gods of the sea. While Fukuoka's other major shrine (Kushida) is festive and merchant-focused, Sumiyoshi is austere, cool, and deeply patrician. The main hall is cypress-bark-roofed in the ancient nagare-zukuri style; the approach passes through a towering stone torii and flanking Japanese black pine trees that are hundreds of years old.
