Tashibu-no-Sho is a valley of rice paddies that has been farmed in essentially the same shape since the Heian period. It was an estate belonging to Usa Shrine, and because the valley is closed on three sides by hills the field boundaries never had room to be consolidated into the large rectangular plots that mechanisation imposed almost everywhere else in Japan. What survives is a medieval field pattern still under cultivation, with the farmhouses on the same sites as the estate stewards' residences.

It is a nationally designated Important Cultural Landscape and forms part of the Kunisaki Peninsula and Usa region's Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System listing. The valley is worked by people who live there, not maintained as an exhibit, and the difference is visible: the water is managed for rice rather than for photographs, which is why the flooded weeks in early summer are the window everyone waits for.

Tashibu-osaki, Bungotakada City. By car from Bungotakada town centre; a car is necessary. Free to view from the road and the marked viewpoint on the hillside. A hand-planting festival is held in the paddies in early summer and a harvest event in autumn — dates vary each year, so confirm with the Bungotakada tourism office. This is private working farmland; stay on roads and paths.

**Late May to mid-June is the reason to come.** Flooded paddies before the rice grows tall turn the whole valley into mirrors of the surrounding hills. Two weeks later the effect is gone. **Use the hillside viewpoint.** From the valley floor the field pattern is invisible; from above, the irregular medieval boundaries read instantly against the geometry of any normal Japanese rice landscape. **The fields are private and worked.** No entering, no walking on the ridges between plots. This gets said locally because people have done it. **The planting festival takes volunteers.** The early-summer hand-planting event is open to participants who register in advance through the town. It is the closest thing to using the landscape as it is meant to be used. **Fukiji is nearby.** The temple was built by the same Usa Shrine priests who held this estate, which makes the pairing more than geographic convenience.
