Tsubaki Okami Yashiro is the head shrine of the roughly two thousand shrines across Japan dedicated to Sarutahiko-no-Okami, the deity who guided the heavenly grandson down to earth and is therefore the god of showing the way — invoked for new ventures, changes of direction and, in modern practice, for business.

It sits at the foot of the Suzuka range on a wooded site with a long approach, and it claims a history of about two thousand years. Beside it stands Tsubakikishi Shrine to Ame-no-Uzume, Sarutahiko's consort and the deity of the performing arts, which draws people from theatre, music and dance. It is free, opens at five in the morning, and has parking for around five hundred cars, which tells you how many people come.

Free parking for about 500 vehicles. Free to visit. Tsubakikishi Shrine to Ame-no-Uzume stands in the same precinct.

New Year and the first days of a month are genuinely busy. **Two minutes from the Shin-Meishin.** Which makes it one of the easiest major shrines in Japan to reach by car from either Nagoya or Osaka.
