Gion District — Geisha Quarter at Dusk
Gion (祇園) is Kyoto's most famous geisha district (hanamachi, 花街 'flower town'), where traditional wooden machiya townhouses line narrow streets lit by paper lanterns. The district centers on Hanamikoji Street, where exclusive ochaya (tea houses) host geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha) for private evening banquets with corporate clients and wealthy patrons.
Gion preserves Kyoto's traditional entertainment culture — geisha perform dance, music (shamisen, fue), and conversation arts refined over centuries. The district is most atmospheric at dusk (18:00–20:00) when geisha travel between appointments in full regalia: white makeup, elaborate kimono, and traditional wooden sandals (geta).
