In the medieval period Heisenji was one of the largest religious complexes in Japan — six thousand monks, forty-eight halls, six thousand dwellings across the mountainside, controlling the Fukui side of the Hakusan pilgrimage. In 1574 it was burned to the ground in a single day during the Ikko-ikki uprising and never rebuilt at scale. What is there now is a small shrine, and underneath it the entire buried town.

What you actually see is moss. The whole forest floor under the cedars is a continuous green carpet, kept that way for centuries, and the approach is stone-paved through it — the local names for the place are the moss shrine and the moss temple. It is twenty minutes from the dinosaur museum that everyone comes to Katsuyama for.

Heisenji-cho, Katsuyama. By the Heisenji-line bus from Katsuyama Station on the Echizen Railway to the Heisenji Hakusan Jinja-mae stop, or by car from Katsuyama IC on the Chubu Jukan Expressway. Free to enter. Parking at the Mahoroba history museum or the first and second lots, both about a short walk, with a ¥300 per vehicle conservation contribution requested. A short circuit takes about 40 minutes.

**The moss is best wet.** After rain or in the early morning while dew is still on it, the green is saturated and the light under the cedars is even. In hard midday sun it looks ordinary. **Walk beyond the shrine.** Most visitors stop at the main hall. The excavated stone streets and house platforms of the medieval town extend well up the slope behind it and are what makes the site historically extraordinary. **Start at Mahoroba.** The history museum at the car park explains what was here before 1574. Without it the site reads as a small shrine in a wood rather than the footprint of a city of thousands. **¥300 per car is voluntary but asked for.** It funds maintenance of the moss and the paths. Pay it. **Combine with the dinosaur museum.** Katsuyama's other attraction is twenty minutes away and is one of the largest dinosaur museums in the world. The pairing is odd and works.
