Kobe Chinatown (Nankinmachi) — Compact Chinese Quarter
Nankinmachi (南京町) is Kobe's Chinatown, a compact 200-meter square district packed with 100+ Chinese restaurants, street food stalls, and specialty shops. The district dates to the 1860s when Chinese merchants settled near Kobe Port. Red lanterns, ornate gates, and bilingual signage create vibrant atmosphere — especially during Lunar New Year when lion dances and fireworks fill the square.
The food focus is Cantonese and Sichuan cuisine: steamed buns (肉まん, nikuman), soup dumplings, mapo tofu, Peking duck, and tapioca desserts. Unlike Yokohama's sprawling Chinatown, Nankinmachi's compact layout allows easy sampling of multiple vendors in a single visit.
