Kurokawa Onsen — Rustic Mountain Hot Spring Village
Kurokawa Onsen (黒川温泉) is a preserved onsen village in the mountains north of Mt. Aso, designed to look like an Edo-period settlement — no modern buildings, no neon signs, only traditional wooden ryokan lining a forested river valley. The 'onsen-hopping pass' (入湯手形, ¥1,300) allows entry to any three public baths among 24 participating ryokan — a system encouraging exploration of different outdoor baths, cave baths, and riverside rotenburo.
