Matsusaka Castle (松坂城跡) was built in 1588 by Gamo Ujisato, a samurai lord who also designed Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle. Though the castle structures no longer exist, the impressive stone walls (野面積み, nozura-zumi style — natural, uncut stones stacked without mortar) remain intact up to 10 meters tall, showcasing Azuchi-Momoyama period masonry. The castle ruins occupy a hilltop overlooking Matsusaka City, with cherry trees planted around the walls creating a popular hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot in spring.

Below the castle, the former merchant district (旧松阪商人の町並み) preserves Edo-period townhouses once owned by wealthy textile merchants. Matsusaka was a major center for Matsusaka cotton (松阪木綿) — a high-quality indigo-dyed cotton fabric traded nationally. Several merchant houses are open as museums, displaying traditional architecture, family heirlooms, and explaining Matsusaka's commercial history during the Edo period.

インサイダーガイド

**Castle wall photography:** The stone walls are Matsusaka Castle's main visual attraction — massive, curvaceous ramparts rising from grass-covered earthworks. The walls are most photogenic from the base looking upward, emphasizing their scale and the organic, irregular stone patterns. The hilltop offers views over Matsusaka City and surrounding mountains. Cherry blossom season (late March–early April) transforms the grounds into a pink canopy — popular with locals for hanami picnics but manageable crowds (nothing like Kyoto). **Merchant house highlights:** Hase Residence (旧長谷川治郎兵衛家, ¥400) is the most impressive preserved merchant house — a sprawling complex with storehouses, gardens, and family living quarters showcasing wealthy merchant lifestyle. The house explains Matsusaka cotton's history (indigo dyeing techniques, trade routes to Edo). Motoori Norinaga Memorial Museum (本居宣長記念館, ¥400) occupies the house of a famous Edo-period scholar — displays his manuscripts and explains kokugaku (national learning) philosophy. **Walking route:** Start at Matsusaka Station, walk 15 minutes to merchant district (10 minutes browsing houses), then climb to castle ruins (10-minute uphill walk, 20–30 minutes exploring walls and views). Descend and have lunch at a Matsusaka beef restaurant (many near station). Total visit: 2–3 hours. The route is compact and walkable — no transportation needed once in Matsusaka.
