Nasu Kogen Strawberry Picking — location in 栃木県, Nasu

栃木県 · Nasu

37.0340°N, 140.0340°E

Tochigi Prefecture is Japan's largest strawberry producer, and the Nasu Kogen (Nasu Highlands) region hosts dozens of strawberry farms offering tabehodai (all-you-can-eat) picking experiences from January through May. The highland elevation and cool climate produce exceptionally sweet berries — varieties like Tochiotome (Tochigi's signature cultivar), Skyberry (large and juicy), and Tochihime (delicate and fragrant).

The farms grow strawberries in elevated hydroponic beds (chest-height), making picking easy and clean — no bending, no mud. Sessions last 30–45 minutes; you pick and eat unlimited strawberries directly in the greenhouse. The berries are grown without excessive pesticides, and most farms provide condensed milk for dipping (traditional Japanese style). Beyond eating, the experience offers insight into Japanese agricultural precision — climate-controlled greenhouses, drip irrigation, pollination management.

インサイダーガイド

**Best farms:** Ichi-go no Mori (large, well-organized, multiple strawberry varieties side-by-side for tasting comparison). Nasu Kogen Yugenson (organic practices, smaller crowds). Strawberry Land Nasu (December–May season, heated greenhouses start earliest). **Timing the season:** January–February berries are small but intensely sweet (cold temperatures concentrate sugars). March–April offers the largest berries and peak flavor. May berries are still good but farms wind down as heat increases. Weekday mornings (9:00–11:00am) have the freshest berries; weekend afternoons (after 14:00) often have picked-over plants. **Picking strategy:** Enter the greenhouse and walk to the far end first — most visitors pick near the entrance, leaving the back rows fuller. Look for deep red berries (fully ripe); avoid white-tipped ones (underripe). Twist gently to detach from the stem. Use the provided condensed milk sparingly — it's traditional but can overwhelm the berry's natural flavor. **Varieties to compare:** If the farm offers multiple varieties, taste each pure (no milk) first. Tochiotome is balanced sweet-tart, Skyberry is larger and juicier, Tochihime is delicate and aromatic. The differences are subtle but real. **Take-home option:** Most farms sell pre-picked strawberries (¥800–1,200 for 300g pack). These are export-grade, perfectly shaped, and make excellent gifts. Some farms ship nationwide (domestic only). **Combine with:** After strawberry picking, visit Nasu Animal Kingdom (a drive, zoo and animal shows) or relax at Nasu Onsen (see separate entry) for a hot spring soak. The Nasu Kogen area also has cheese farms, wineries, and art museums — a full resort zone.
