Shirakawa was the gate to the north — the barrier on the old road where the Japanese state ended and the frontier began, a place written about in poetry for a thousand years before there was a castle here. The castle came in the seventeenth century and was destroyed in the Boshin War in 1868 after a battle that levelled much of the town.

The three-storey turret and the front gate were rebuilt in the 1990s, and unusually they were rebuilt in wood by traditional methods, using drawings from the Edo period rather than reinforced concrete. That makes the interior worth entering: bare timber, steep stairs, no lift. The stone walls around it are original and were damaged in the 2011 earthquake, then repaired over several years. It stands directly behind Shirakawa Station and is visible from the platform.

Kakunai, Shirakawa, directly north of JR Shirakawa Station and visible from the platform. About a short walk from the station. The park and grounds are free. The reconstructed three-storey turret has its own opening hours and rest days — confirm on arrival. The turret and gate were rebuilt in wood by traditional methods in the 1990s using Edo-period drawings.

That is why the town matters historically at all. **Combine with ramen.** Shirakawa's hand-cut ramen shops are the other reason people stop, and Tora Shokudo is fifteen minutes out of town.
