아리타는 일본 자기의 발상지다 — 1616년 조선 도공 이삼평이 이즈미야마 언덕에서 진짜 자기 생산에 적합한 백토를 발견하며 아리타 가마가 시작되었고, 이후 200년간 네덜란드 동인도회사를 통해 유럽 왕실에 자기를 공급했다. 이 마을엔 지금도 아리타야키를 생산하는 100곳이 넘는 가마가 운영 중이며, 아리타포슬린파크는 독일 마이센 양식의 바로크 건물(유럽인들이 아리타 수출품의 모델로 삼았던 양식)을 논밭 사이에 뜻밖에 재현해놓았다.
