Echizen washi (越前和紙) is handmade paper produced using techniques unchanged for 1,500 years, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014. The paper is made from kozo (mulberry bark), mitsumata (oriental paperbush), or gampi fibers soaked, beaten, and suspended in water, then hand-screened onto bamboo frames one sheet at a time. The resulting paper is extraordinarily strong, flexible, and translucent — used for traditional applications from shoji screens to calligraphy scrolls to modern art prints.

The Echizen Washi Village in Otaki district preserves the craft through working paper mills, a museum, and workshops. The Udatsu Paper & Culture Museum displays antique papermaking tools and hosts live demonstrations daily (11:00 and 14:00) where visitors watch artisans create washi using traditional techniques. The adjacent workshops offer hands-on papermaking (¥800, 30 minutes) — participants dip bamboo screens into fiber slurry, shake to distribute fibers evenly, and press the sheet. The finished paper (decorated with flower petals or colored fibers) is dried and provided as a souvenir.

인사이더 가이드

**Papermaking workshop:** The basic workshop produces A4-size sheets suitable for framing or use as stationery. Participants can add dried flower petals, maple leaves, or colored fiber pulp for decorative effects. The instructor demonstrates the signature 'nagashi-zuki' technique — a rhythmic shaking motion that aligns fibers and creates washi's characteristic strength. Sheets dry in 30 minutes using heated presses; finished pieces are provided in protective folders. Advanced workshops (¥3,000, 2 hours, reservation required) teach larger sheet production and multiple-layer techniques. **Visiting working mills:** Several family-run paper mills in Otaki accept visitors by appointment. Yanase Washi Studio (やなせ和紙工房) and Iwano Heizaburo Seijijo (岩野平三郎製紙所) are National Designated Important Intangible Cultural Property holders — visiting these ateliers shows papermaking at its highest level. Arrange visits through the museum or local tourism office; Japanese language helpful but not required. **What to buy:** Echizen washi ranges from ¥500 for decorative sheets to ¥50,000 for artist-grade calligraphy paper. The museum shop sells notebooks (¥1,500), letter sets (¥800), and lampshades (¥8,000–15,000). Iwano-brand calligraphy paper is used by Japan's top sho artists — a 10-sheet set costs ¥5,000 but represents the pinnacle of the craft. **Washi no Sato Festival:** Held annually in mid-October, this two-day event features papermaking competitions, artisan demonstrations, and sales of irregular stock at 50% off. The highlight is the 'giant washi' demonstration where 10 artisans collaboratively create a single 3-meter sheet using a massive bamboo screen. Free admission; crowded but festive.
