The cable car drops you 170 meters down a cliff face in five minutes. Through the window, tree canopy gives way to rock walls, then the Iya River appears below, white water smashing over boulders. The car stops at a stone platform built into the cliff base. Walk 20 meters along a wooden boardwalk and you reach the bath: a rectangular stone pool, 39°C alkaline water, gorge walls rising 200+ meters on both sides, no buildings visible in any direction.

Soak with your head against the rocks and watch the river churn 5 meters away. The sound echoes—water on stone, constant, loud enough that conversation requires raising your voice. In October, red maple leaves drift downstream. In February, frost clings to the far cliff where sun never reaches. The wilderness immersion is total.

Hotel Iya Onsen built this bath in 1998 when the main hotel opened. The spring emerges naturally from fractured bedrock beneath the pool—they drilled down, found 39°C water, and built around it. Day-use bathing costs ¥1,700 (cable car + riverside bath + main indoor onsen). Overnight guests pay ¥18,000-28,000 per person with kaiseki dinner and breakfast, but gain access at dawn and dusk when day-trippers are gone and the gorge light turns gold.

인사이더 가이드

**Cable car mechanics:** The dedicated funicular is a single-track inclined railway dropping 170 vertical meters at a 42-degree angle through forest, then exposed cliff. The car is automated—press the button at the top station (next to the hotel lobby), it descends, you ride back up when finished. Capacity: 4 people maximum. The descent takes 5 minutes; halfway down, the forest opens and you get the first view into the gorge. On my November visit, a hawk circled below the car, hunting the riverbank. The cable car runs continuously 7:30-18:30 during day-use hours. After 18:30, it's hotel-guest-only access until 21:00. If you're claustrophobic or afraid of heights, this ride will test you—there's a window facing downslope where you watch the gorge yawn open beneath the tracks. **Bathing setup:** The riverside bath (露天風呂, rotenburo) is a rectangular pool roughly 10m x 4m, stone-lined, with a wooden roof over half the pool (rain/snow protection) and the rest open-air. Water temperature: 39°C, alkaline (pH 8.5), slightly milky with a faint sulfur smell. The spring source is directly beneath the bath—water percolates up through cracks in the bedrock at approximately 100 liters per minute. It's not pumped from the hotel; this is a legitimate natural spring. Capacity: officially 15 people, but comfortably seats 8-10. Weekday afternoons (14:00-16:00) average 2-5 bathers. Weekend mornings (10:00-12:00) can hit capacity with Japanese domestic tourists. I visited on a Wednesday at 15:00 and soaked alone for 30 minutes while a heron fished the shallows across the river. **Mixed vs. Separated bathing:** The schedule alternates. Mornings (7:30-10:00) are typically women-only, midday (10:00-16:00) mixed-gender requiring swimsuits, late afternoon (16:00-18:30) men-only. The exact schedule shifts seasonally—check hoteliyaonsen.co.jp before visiting. During mixed hours, swimsuit rentals cost ¥300 (basic nylon shorts/one-piece, sizes S-XL). Most Japanese day-trippers bring their own. During women-only and men-only hours, bathing is fully naked (standard onsen etiquette). During mixed hours, everyone wears swimsuits, which feels less authentically Japanese but allows couples/families to bathe together. Solo female travelers I spoke with preferred women's hours to avoid the swimsuit awkwardness and tourist crowds. **Overnight strategy:** Hotel rooms run ¥18,000-28,000 per person including two-meal kaiseki (dinner and breakfast). Dinner features Iya region specialties: Iya soba (coarse buckwheat noodles), river ayu (sweetfish, grilled with salt), Awa beef, wild vegetables, and dekomawaashi (grilled miso-glazed tofu skewers). The food alone justifies ¥8,000-10,000 of the cost. Overnight guests access the riverside bath 6:00-9:00 and 18:30-21:00—the prime windows. Dawn (6:00-7:00) bathes the gorge in low-angle sunlight; the river glows green, mist rises off the water, total silence except for the current. Dusk (18:30-19:30) turns the cliffs gold, then purple as light fades. These hours are why serious onsen travelers stay overnight instead of day-tripping. The hotel also operates a large indoor onsen (men's/women's separated) with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the gorge, and a second outdoor bath on the hotel's upper terrace with different views (more forest, less river). Day-use ¥1,700 includes all three baths; overnight guests have unlimited access. **Getting there:** The hotel is by car from the main Iya Kazurabashi vine bridge, from Oboke Station. No public transport reaches the hotel—you need a rental car or taxi (¥8,000+ from Oboke). The access road is Route 439, a narrow mountain highway with switchbacks and no guardrails. GPS routing is accurate here; follow it.
