Everyone goes to Izumo Taisha for the architecture. The oldest surviving example of that architecture is here instead, in a wooded corner of suburban Matsue that almost no visitor reaches. Kamosu Shrine's main hall was rebuilt in 1583 and is the earliest taisha-zukuri building still standing — considerably older than the hall at Izumo Taisha, which dates from 1744 — and it is designated a National Treasure.

The deity is Izanami, mother of the islands of Japan, and the site is old enough to be listed in the eighth-century Izumo Fudoki. What makes the visit is the approach: a stairway of rough natural boulders, laid rather than dressed, climbing under trees to a small compound with no ticket office, no shop and usually nobody in it. The building is the point, and you can stand a few metres from it. For anyone who has looked at Izumo Taisha across its fence and wanted to see the form properly, this is the place to do it.

Oba-cho, Matsue. From JR Matsue Station take the bus toward Kanbe no Sato — around 20–25 minutes — and it is a short walk from the terminus. Free to enter, no fixed closing time. Parking available on site.

**Pair it with Izumo Taisha, in this order.** Seeing the 1583 hall after the 1744 one at Izumo makes the differences legible — the roof pitch, the off-centre entrance, the interior column arrangement. Doing it the other way round is a much weaker experience. **Do the Ou six-shrine circuit.** Kamosu is one of the Ou Rokusha, six ancient shrines clustered in this part of Matsue that also includes Yaegaki and Kumano Taisha. All are within a short drive of each other and together they make a half-day that most visitors to Shimane never even hear about. **The stone steps are genuinely rough.** They are natural boulders rather than cut stone and are uneven and slick after rain. Proper shoes; not a stroller route. **It is quiet, and that is the appeal.** There is no commercial infrastructure of any kind. Bring what you need, allow forty minutes, and expect to share the site with very few people even in the Izumo high season of October. **Getting there without a car is possible but slow.** The Kanbe no Sato bus from Matsue Station runs to a terminus a few minutes' walk away. Check the return timetable before you set out — services thin out in the afternoon.
