하코다테산(函館山, 334m)은 일본 관광 당국이 세계 3대 야경(홍콩・나폴리와 함께) 중 하나로 꼽는 전망을 자랑한다. 이 풍경이 특별한 이유는 하코다테의 독특한 지형 때문이다 — 도시는 산과 홋카이도 본토를 잇는 좁은 사주(모래톱) 위에 자리해, 정상에서 양쪽 해안선을 동시에 볼 수 있는 풍경을 만들어낸다. 밤이 되면 도시의 불빛이 두 개의 어두운 만 사이에서 빛나는 나비 모양을 그린다.
로프웨이(케이블카)는 3분 만에 334m를 올라 전망대에 도착한다. 맑은 날엔 츠가루 해협의 배들과 바다 건너 시모키타 반도(아오모리), 하코다테 역사 지구 전체를 한눈에 볼 수 있다. 해가 진 후 30분간 이어지는 블루아워엔 하늘의 그러데이션과 도시의 불빛이 대비를 이루며 특히 극적인 풍경을 만든다.
