서기 940년 창건된 나리타산 신쇼지는 일본에서 가장 중요한 진언종 사찰 중 하나이자 연간 1천만 명 이상이 찾는 주요 순례지다. 사찰 단지는 언덕 위로 여러 기도당과 3층탑, 몇 킬로미터 밖에서도 보이는 대평화탑을 아우르며 펼쳐져 있다. 주된 예배 대상은 고보 대사가 직접 조각했다고 전해지는 후도묘오(부동명왕) 상이다.
사찰로 향하는 참배길 오모테산도 거리는 센베이(쌀과자)와 장어, 불교 부적을 파는 전통 상점들이 늘어선 1km 길이의 대로로, 에도 시대부터 크게 변하지 않았다. 살아있는 참배지와 보존된 상인 거리의 조합 덕분에 나리타산은 단순한 관광지가 아니라 살아있는 역사적 생태계처럼 느껴진다.
