Rakusan-en is an early Edo daimyo garden in the small castle town of Obata, laid out by the Oda family — descendants of Oda Nobunaga, who were given this modest domain after the family lost everything else. The garden was buried and forgotten for centuries, excavated from the 1990s, and restored and reopened as a nationally designated place of scenic beauty. It is one of very few surviving daimyo gardens in the Kanto region, and almost nobody outside the prefecture has heard of it.

The design is a stroll garden built around a pond, with the surrounding hills deliberately borrowed as backdrop, and thatched tea arbours placed on rises so that the view is composed differently from each. Because the restoration worked from excavation rather than imagination, the sightlines are the ones the Oda actually used. The town outside the gate is worth the extra half hour: Obata keeps its Edo-period samurai residence walls and a network of open water channels running along the streets.

**Walk to the arbours, not just around the pond.** The garden is designed to be read from the raised tea houses, where the pond, the planting and the hills line up. Circling the water at ground level and leaving is the common mistake — the composed views are all from above. **Do the town in the same visit.** Obata's old quarter is a few minutes on foot: samurai-era earthen walls, a preserved residence, and stone-lined water channels running beside the streets. Garden plus town is a comfortable two hours; the garden alone is under an hour. **Seasons here are quiet ones.** There is no headline bloom drawing coaches. Late November colour and the fresh green of May are the two strongest windows, and even then this is a place where you can be more or less alone on a weekday. **Winter hours are an hour shorter.** In practice that makes it a morning or early-afternoon stop in winter, not a late one. **Pair it with Tomioka.** The silk mill and Nukisaki Shrine are both nearby, and the three together make a full day in a corner of Gunma that most itineraries skip entirely.
