사쿠라지마 활화산 — 매일 분화와 함께 살아가는 삶
사쿠라지마는 세계에서 가장 활발한 화산 중 하나로, 연간 수천 번 분화한다 — 만 건너편 가고시마시 주민들에게 연기 기둥과 화산재는 일상적인 삶의 일부다. 이 화산은 하늘을 지배하며, 완벽한 원뿔형 봉우리는 높이 1,117m에 달하고, 원래는 섬이었으나 1914년 용암류로 본토와 연결되었다.
방문객은 차나 버스를 타고 화산 사면의 전망대까지 갈 수 있고, 흐르다 얼어붙은 용암지대를 걸을 수 있으며, 머리 위로 연기를 내뿜는 분화구를 바라보며 온천 족욕을 즐길 수도 있다. 또한 화산재에 반쯤 파묻힌 신도 신사 도리이 — 1914년 분화의 위력을 기리는 기념물로 그대로 남겨진 매몰 도리이도 방문할 수 있다.
