Senba Lake Cycling — location in 이바라키현, Mito

이바라키현 · Mito

36.4128°N, 140.4397°E

Senba Lake is a narrow, 12-kilometer-long reservoir on the northern edge of Mito City, created by damming the Naka River in the 1960s for irrigation and flood control. The lake is surrounded by a paved cycling path that loops the entire perimeter, offering flat, car-free riding through mixed woodland, wetlands, and small fishing villages. The route is popular with local cyclists but largely unknown to tourists.

The western shore passes through forest and offers views across the water to Mount Tsukuba in the distance. The eastern shore skirts rice paddies and lotus marshes that bloom in July–August. The northern tip features a bird sanctuary where herons, egrets, and seasonal migratory waterfowl gather. The full loop is 20km and takes 90 minutes at a casual pace, with multiple rest stops, public restrooms, and small cafés. It is a peaceful, low-key experience — the opposite of Hitachi Seaside Park's crowds.

인사이더 가이드

**Rental & route:** Rent bicycles at the Furusato Fureaikan on the north shore (credit card accepted, English rental form available). The loop is marked with distance signs every kilometer. Ride clockwise for smoother elevation flow (minimal climbs). **Stops along the way:** Kairakuen Garden is accessible via a 2km detour from the southern end of the lake — lock your bike and walk through the garden (see separate entry). The Senba Lake Bird Sanctuary (north shore) has an observation deck with binoculars; best in early morning (6:00–8:00am). Café Senba (west shore) serves coffee and homemade apple pie (¥600), popular with local cyclists. **Lotus season (July–August):** The eastern marshes bloom with pink lotus flowers. Best viewing 6:00–9:00am when flowers are fully open; they close by noon. The sight of hundreds of lotus rising above still water with egrets wading is quietly spectacular. **Photography:** The western shore offers clean sightlines to Mount Tsukuba across the lake — best light late afternoon (4:00–5:30pm). Bring a telephoto lens (70–200mm) to compress distance and isolate the mountain. Sunset reflections on the lake (May–August) are painterly. **Combine with:** Start the day cycling Senba Lake, then ride the 2km detour to Kairakuen for plum blossoms (March) or general garden exploration. Finish in downtown Mito for natto dinner. **Practical tips:** Bring water and snacks — food options are limited mid-route. Weekday mornings (8:00–11:00am) are nearly deserted. Summer can be humid; start early. Autumn is ideal (cool, dry, colorful).
