Chiran Peace Museum — location in Kagoshima, Chiran

Kagoshima · Chiran

31.3626°N, 130.4340°E

Chiran was an army airfield, and in the last months of the Pacific war it was the main departure point for special attack sorties against the American fleet at Okinawa. Four hundred and thirty-nine pilots left from here and did not return. Most were in their late teens or early twenties.

The museum holds their letters. That is what it is for and what makes it hard: final messages written to mothers and sisters, many of them by boys who had been in secondary school two years earlier, alongside personal effects, photographs and a recovered aircraft. There is no attempt to glorify and no attempt to explain away; the material is presented and you read it. It is open every day of the year, costs ¥500, and takes as long as you can stand. The preserved samurai gardens of Chiran are ten minutes away, which is a strange pairing and the reason many people see both.

Insider Guide

Premium
**The letters are the museum.** Everything else is context. Allow time to read, and expect it to be difficult — a great many of these were written by teenagers. **Some material has English translation, much does not.** Audio guides and translated panels cover part of the exhibition. Reading about the site beforehand helps considerably. **Open every day.** Including New Year, which is unusual. Typhoons are the only regular cause of closure. **The triangular barracks are outside.** Reconstructed half-buried quarters where the pilots waited stand in the grounds and are part of the visit. **Chiran's samurai street is ten minutes away.** The preserved gardens and hedged lanes are a completely different Chiran. Doing both in a day is common and the contrast is jarring in a way that is probably useful.
