Dorokyo Gorge — location in Wakayama, Shingu

Wakayama · Shingu

33.8082°N, 135.8516°E

Dorokyo is a gorge on the Kitayama river where it forms the boundary between Wakayama, Nara and Mie — thirty-odd kilometres of green water between walls of eroded rock, designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in its central section. The colour of the water is the thing people remember; it is a deep jade that does not look like river water.

The famous way to see it was the waterjet boat from Shiko, which ran the gorge at speed with the roof opened at the best section. That service has been suspended since January 2021 because sediment washed into the river by the 2011 Kii Peninsula floods made the channel unnavigable, and it has not resumed. A separate operator runs boats on part of the gorge, and the road viewpoints and the Kitayama river rafting are the other ways in. Check what is running before planning around it.

Access Information

Hitari, Kumanogawa-cho, Shingu, and the surrounding Kitayama river gorge. The Dorokyo waterjet boat from Shiko has been suspended since 1 January 2021 following sediment build-up from the 2011 floods and has not resumed. A separate river boat operator runs services on part of the gorge; road viewpoints are accessible by car. Confirm what is operating with Shingu tourism before travelling.

Insider Guide

Premium
**The waterjet boat is not running.** Suspended since January 2021 and still suspended. A great many guides and blogs still describe it as the way to see the gorge. It is not. **Check what is operating.** A different company runs boats on part of the gorge, and services change. Shingu tourism or the Kumano Hongu association will tell you what is actually sailing. **The road viewpoints work.** Points along the Kitayama river and from the Nara and Mie sides give access without a boat. **Rafting is the other option.** Commercial rafting on the Kitayama river runs in season and reaches parts of the gorge that road access does not. **Combine with Hongu.** The gorge sits between Shingu and Hongu, so it fits into a Kumano itinerary rather than needing its own day.
