Shiraito Falls (Itoshima) — location in Fukuoka, Itoshima

Fukuoka · Itoshima

33.5275°N, 130.2365°E

High on the granite flanks of Mt. Raizan (955m), Shiraito Falls drops 24 meters in a single white ribbon into a deep emerald pool. The name means 'white thread' and the description is precise — the falls is narrow and straight, threading vertically through dense fern-draped walls. The pool at the base maintains year-round temperatures of 12–14°C; on humid August days it feels like stepping into air conditioning.

The falls is accessible via a 40-minute forest trail from the trailhead parking area — a walk through mixed cedar and deciduous forest that requires crossing two wooden bridges and one section of fixed-rope scramble. The forest here is officially designated a 'forest bathing healing site' by the Japanese Forestry Agency. The 30-minute sitting time at the base that researchers recommend for maximum therapeutic benefit feels entirely natural: there is nowhere better to sit.

Insider Guide

**The alternate route:** A longer trail (1.5 hrs each way) climbs from the falls to the Raizan summit shrine. The summit view on clear days extends from Hakata Bay to the Iki Island chain in the Korea Strait. Bring 1.5L water — no sources after the falls. **Somen nagashi:** From July to August, a temporary riverside restaurant at the trailhead serves somen noodles floated down bamboo channels — an old Japanese summer tradition. **Photography:** The falls photographs best at overcast lighting (the pool turns deepest turquoise) and in autumn (November) when maple leaves frame the white water. Tripod recommended for long exposure — the sound-deadening pool creates a natural privacy zone. **Wildlife:** The forest above the falls is one of the last habitats in northern Kyushu for the Japanese flying squirrel (momonga). Active at dusk — the area around the upper bridge at 17:00–18:00 in summer gives the best chance of a sighting.
