Shiraito Falls (Itoshima)
Fukuoka · Itoshima
33.5275°N, 130.2365°E
High on the granite flanks of Mt. Raizan (955m), Shiraito Falls drops 24 meters in a single white ribbon into a deep emerald pool. The name means 'white thread' and the description is precise — the falls is narrow and straight, threading vertically through dense fern-draped walls. The pool at the base maintains year-round temperatures of 12–14°C; on humid August days it feels like stepping into air conditioning.
The falls is accessible via a 40-minute forest trail from the trailhead parking area — a walk through mixed cedar and deciduous forest that requires crossing two wooden bridges and one section of fixed-rope scramble. The forest here is officially designated a 'forest bathing healing site' by the Japanese Forestry Agency. The 30-minute sitting time at the base that researchers recommend for maximum therapeutic benefit feels entirely natural: there is nowhere better to sit.
