One of the three great wild daffodil grounds in Japan is on the cliffs of the Echizen coast, and it flowers in December and January — in a snow region, on a shore that takes the full winter weather off the Sea of Japan. The local name for the flower is the snow-in-flower, and seeing white daffodils on a headland with sleet coming in sideways is a specific and rather bracing pleasure.

The plants grow wild on the terraced slopes above the sea and are also farmed for cut flowers; Echizen daffodils are said to carry more scent than those grown elsewhere because of the salt wind. The Suisen Land park at Cape Echizen is the organised viewing point, and the terraced fields at Nashigadaira above it are the wilder version. Crab season runs at the same time, which is why local hotels sell the two together.

Access Information

Chigadaira and around, Echizen Town, Nyu District, on the Echizen coast. About 50 minutes by car from Sabae IC on the Hokuriku Expressway; by public transport, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes from JR Fukui Station by Keifuku bus on the Shimizu Green Line and the Hoyahoya-go Yumizaki route. The Echizen-Misaki Suisen Land park is open 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and does not close from November to March. Bloom runs from around December to February with the peak in December and January.

**December and January, which is the point.** Wild daffodils flowering on a cliff in a snow region in midwinter. Coming in spring gets you a coast and no flowers. **The terraced fields are wilder than the park.** Suisen Land is the organised viewpoint; the Nashigadaira terraces above it are where the plants grow on the old cultivation terraces with the sea below. **Winter driving on a coast road.** Route 305 along the Echizen coast is exposed and takes weather off the sea. Check conditions before setting out. **Crab at the same time.** Echizen crab season overlaps exactly, and the coast's inns sell daffodil viewing and crab dinners as a package. It is the reason most people from the region come. **Smell them.** The claim locally is that salt wind makes these more strongly scented than daffodils grown inland. Whether or not that is measurable, they are noticeably fragrant.
