Gero Onsen Gassho Village — Hot Springs Meet Heritage Houses

Gero Onsen Gassho Village (合掌の里) combines two of Gifu's signatures — alkaline hot springs and UNESCO-style gassho-zukuri farmhouses — in a single hillside complex. The village relocated 10 historic thatched-roof farmhouses from Shirakawa-go and surrounding areas, reconstructing them in a forested park with walking paths, ponds, and an open-air rotenburo (露天風呂, outdoor bath) fed by Gero's famously smooth onsen water. The setting creates a hybrid experience: wander through Edo-period farmhouse interiors, then soak in thermal waters with forest views.

The farmhouses function as small museums displaying rural Gifu life — farming tools, silk-production equipment, traditional furnishings — and one building houses a pottery workshop. The rotenburo (additional ¥600 beyond village entry) is a simple stone-lined pool surrounded by trees, offering intimacy and quiet missing from larger resort baths. The village attracts fewer visitors than Gero's main onsen street, making it ideal for travelers seeking calm immersion over resort bustle.
