Gosho Aoyama, who has been drawing Detective Conan since 1994, grew up in Hokuei, and the town has leaned into that completely. There is a Conan street from the station with bronze statues along it, a Conan bridge, a Conan-themed police box, and at the end of it this museum: original artwork, a reconstruction of Aoyama's workspace, and a set of interactive rooms built around the tricks and gadgets from the series.

It is a serious manga museum rather than a merchandise outlet — the original pages and the working material are the substance of it — and it works for people who have never read the series as well as for the ones who have flown from Shanghai to be there. The neighbouring Beika shopping street, named after the fictional Beika town in the manga, has been developed alongside it.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Closing days are irregular.** There is no fixed weekly rest day and the schedule is published month by month. This is the single thing to check. **Walk from the station.** Conan Street runs about 1.4 km from Yura Station to the museum with bronze statues along it, so the walk is part of the visit rather than a slog. **The original artwork is the point.** Pages, roughs and Aoyama's reconstructed desk. Even without knowing the series, seeing how weekly manga is actually produced is worth the ¥700. **It draws an international crowd.** Detective Conan is enormous across East Asia and a good proportion of visitors here have travelled from abroad specifically for it. **Combine with the coast.** Hokuei is on the San'in coast between Kurayoshi and Yonago, so the museum fits into a drive rather than needing its own day.
