Hamamatsu Sand Dunes — location in Shizuoka, Hamamatsu

Nakatajima Sand Dunes (中田島砂丘) are Japan's three largest coastal sand dunes, stretching 4km along the Pacific coast with dunes reaching up to 15 meters high. The windswept landscape creates rippled patterns in the sand and sparse vegetation clinging to dune edges. The dunes are formed by Tenryu River sediment deposited offshore and blown inland by prevailing winds — an ongoing geological process that maintains the desert-like environment.

The dunes are also an important ecological site — Loggerhead sea turtles (アカウミガメ) nest here May–August, the northernmost nesting site for this species. Conservation efforts protect nesting areas while allowing public access to most of the dunes. Sunrise over the Pacific from the dune crests is particularly photogenic, and the area attracts photographers capturing the interplay of sand, grass, and ocean.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Photography timing:** The dunes are most photogenic early morning (6:00–8:00) when side-lighting from sunrise creates dramatic shadows emphasizing ripple patterns. The sand's surface is smoothest after overnight winds before foot traffic disrupts patterns. Sunset (17:00–18:30 summer, 16:00–17:00 winter) offers warm light but western sky lacks ocean horizon (ocean is east). Midday harsh light flattens the dunes' contours — avoid 11:00–15:00. Winter provides clearest skies and most dramatic wind patterns but cold ocean wind requires warm clothing. **Sea turtle nesting season:** Loggerhead turtles nest May–August, with peak activity June–July. Female turtles come ashore at night (22:00–4:00) to dig nests and lay 100+ eggs. Hatchlings emerge 50–60 days later and instinctively rush to ocean. Conservation volunteers monitor nests and protect them from predators. Public viewing is restricted to protect turtles, but the Sea Turtle Museum shows videos, exhibits eggs, and explains conservation. If visiting during nesting season, check museum schedule for educational programs. **Desert-like experience:** The dunes create unexpected desert landscape in humid Japan. Bring: water (no vendors on dunes, summer heat is intense), sunscreen (no shade, reflection from sand intensifies UV), shoes that tolerate sand (bare feet on hot summer sand causes burns). The walk from parking to ocean is 500m through soft sand — more strenuous than it appears. Wind is constant (averaging 4–6 m/s) and sand blows in eyes/camera; bring protective eyewear and camera covers.
