Iga (伊賀) was one of two historical ninja strongholds in Japan (alongside Koka in Shiga), and Iga-Ueno Ninja Museum (伊賀流忍者博物館) preserves authentic ninja heritage through interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and a preserved ninja house (忍者屋敷) filled with hidden doors, trap floors, and secret compartments. The museum is operated by descendants of Iga ninja clans and focuses on historical accuracy rather than Hollywood mythology.

The ninja house tour (guided by kimono-clad demonstrators) reveals concealed weapons caches, rotating walls for quick escapes, and hidden staircases under floorboards. The museum's 'Ninja Experience Hall' showcases 400+ historical ninja tools: shuriken (throwing stars), kusarigama (chain-sickle weapons), climbing claws, disguised weapons, and smoke bombs. Live ninja shows (30 minutes, included in admission) demonstrate acrobatic combat techniques, sword fighting, and shuriken throwing by professional practitioners.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Ninja show timing:** Live ninja demonstrations run at 10:30, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, and 15:00 (30 minutes each). The 13:00 or 14:00 shows have smallest crowds. The performers are trained martial artists (some hold ninjutsu instructor licenses) who explain historical context between combat sequences. Photography/video allowed. The show is mostly physical demonstration with minimal Japanese narration — language barrier is minimal. **Ninja house tour:** The guided tour (Japanese only, but visual demonstrations are self-explanatory) lasts 15 minutes. Guides demonstrate trap doors, revolving walls, and hidden escape routes with theatrical flair. The house is a genuine Edo-period structure relocated to the museum grounds. Children love the interactive nature; adults appreciate the authentic architecture. Non-Japanese speakers can request English pamphlets explaining each mechanism. **Costume rental:** Ninja costumes are available for children and adults (¥1,100, includes museum entry). The rental includes black or colored ninja garb and hood. Many visitors wear costumes throughout the museum for photos. It's touristy but fun for families. The nearby Iga-Ueno Castle (¥500, a short walk) allows entry in ninja costume, creating photo opportunities on the castle walls.
