I. M. Pei built this museum into a mountain in the Shigaraki hills with about eighty percent of it underground, on the explicit model of the Peach Blossom Spring — the fourth-century Chinese story of a fisherman who follows a stream through a grove, squeezes through a gap in a cliff and finds a hidden valley. The approach reproduces the sequence: a walk up an avenue of weeping cherries, then a curved tunnel through the hillside, then a suspension bridge, and only then the building.

Inside is a private collection of ancient art — Egyptian, Persian, Gandharan, Greek, Roman, Chinese — alongside Japanese work, shown in daylight through a glass and steel roof detailed to read as a Japanese timber frame. It is a long way from anywhere, opens in seasonal blocks rather than continuously, and the cherry tunnel is at its point for about a week in early April.

Shigaraki-cho Tashiro Momodani 300, Koka City. About 50 minutes by bus from Ishiyama Station on the JR Biwako Line, or about 20 minutes by car from Shigaraki. Open 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM with last admission at 4:00 PM. Admission ¥1,300 adults, ¥1,000 high school and university students, free for junior high school students and under. Closed Mondays during each opening period, opening the following weekday if Monday is a public holiday, and closed between exhibition periods — the museum opens in seasonal blocks, so confirm the current calendar before travelling.

**Check the calendar before anything else.** The museum closes between exhibition periods, sometimes for weeks. It is 50 minutes by bus from the nearest station and there is nothing else out there. **Walk the approach; do not take the shuttle.** An electric cart runs to the entrance for those who need it, but the tunnel and the bridge are the architecture. Pei built the sequence to be walked. **Early April for the cherry tunnel.** Weeping cherries along the approach, and the timing is about a week. This is the museum's busiest period by a wide margin. **The collection is not Japanese art.** Egyptian, Persian, Gandharan, Greek, Roman and Chinese antiquities are the core, which surprises people who came for the building. **The restaurant uses the farm's own produce.** Organic, grown by the foundation, and it books out at lunch during cherry season. **Eighty percent is underground.** The mountain was cut open, the museum built, and the hillside put back over it, which is why the building reads as a roof emerging from a ridge.
