Raizan Sennyoji Temple — Ancient Mountain Monastery
On the upper slopes of Mt. Raizan, behind a cedar forest that filters almost all direct sunlight, Sennyoji Temple has been maintaining an active monastic community since 729 AD. The main hall, rebuilt in 1678 after a fire, is small and dark, its pillars worn smooth by the hands of a thousand years of supplicants. The bell tower rings at precisely 6:00 and 18:00 — the sound carries 3 km down the valley.
The temple's real treasure is its immediate environment: a mossy precinct where cedar trees have been growing for three centuries, where stone lanterns lean at angles that gravity has corrected over decades, where the sound of running water from a spring at the base of the main hall creates a constant background that makes silence feel inhabited rather than empty.
