Raizan Sennyoji Temple — location in Fukuoka, Itoshima

Fukuoka · Itoshima

33.5265°N, 130.2389°E

On the upper slopes of Mt. Raizan, behind a cedar forest that filters almost all direct sunlight, Sennyoji Temple has been maintaining an active monastic community since 729 AD. The main hall, rebuilt in 1678 after a fire, is small and dark, its pillars worn smooth by the hands of a thousand years of supplicants. The bell tower rings at precisely 6:00 and 18:00 — the sound carries 3 km down the valley.

The temple's real treasure is its immediate environment: a mossy precinct where cedar trees have been growing for three centuries, where stone lanterns lean at angles that gravity has corrected over decades, where the sound of running water from a spring at the base of the main hall creates a constant background that makes silence feel inhabited rather than empty.

Insider Guide

**Cedar forest meditation walk:** A 1.2-km path around the temple perimeter passes through the oldest section of the cedar grove — trees that were planted 300+ years ago now form a cathedral ceiling 40 meters overhead. The path is unmarked on any map. Begin at the left side of the main gate. **Spring at the hall:** The spring water that flows from beneath the main hall is considered sacred. Bring a small empty bottle — this water is collected by locals for tea, claimed to have a different mineral profile from tap water. The taste difference is not imaginary. **Combine with Shiraito Falls:** Sennyoji is a drive from Shiraito Falls (see separate entry) — both visits fit in a half-day mountain circuit with time for the falls pool, lunch at the somen restaurant, and the temple by late afternoon. **Annual fire ceremony:** The Saito Goma fire ceremony is held in March — a large outdoor fire ritual where monks chant sutras while throwing offerings into a bonfire. Check Itoshima City tourism calendar for the date.
