Kadowaki Suspension Bridge (門脇吊橋) is a 48-meter-long suspension bridge spanning 23 meters above the Pacific Ocean at Jogasaki Coast. The bridge connects two basalt cliff edges over crashing waves — the deck is made of widely spaced wooden planks with ocean visible through gaps, creating significant vertigo for anyone afraid of heights. Wind causes the bridge to sway, adding to the thrilling (or terrifying) experience.

The bridge is part of the Jogasaki Coast hiking trail system, offering dramatic ocean views and access to the Kadowaki Lighthouse. The basalt cliffs surrounding the bridge were formed by lava flows from nearby Mt. Omuro volcano, creating geometric columnar patterns characteristic of rapid volcanic cooling. The contrast of vermillion bridge against dark volcanic rock and blue ocean creates striking photography, especially during golden hour when low sun illuminates the scene.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Bridge crossing experience:** The bridge deck's 10cm gaps between wooden planks expose the ocean 23m below — creates visceral vertigo even for people comfortable with heights. The swaying is constant (bridge is designed to flex in wind) and becomes more pronounced when multiple people cross simultaneously or during high wind. Acrophobics should approach cautiously; test comfort level by walking partway and retreating if necessary. The experience is brief (48m bridge takes 30 seconds to cross at normal pace) but memorable. Early morning or late afternoon sees fewer crowds, allowing solo crossing for maximum thrill/fear. **Photography opportunities:** The bridge provides multiple photo angles: (1) from approach path showing full bridge span with ocean background, (2) from bridge deck looking down at waves crashing on volcanic rocks, (3) from bridge looking toward lighthouse and coast, (4) from cliff edge showing bridge profile against ocean. Best light: late afternoon (15:00–17:00) when western sun side-lights the bridge creating depth and shadow. Overcast days create moody atmosphere but lose color vibrancy. Winter (Dec–Feb) offers clearest skies; summer (June–Aug) can be hazy from humidity. **Coastal trail extension:** The Jogasaki Picnic Course extends 3km from Kadowaki Bridge to Jogasaki Lighthouse — a cliff-edge trail alternating between forest and ocean viewpoints. The path is well-maintained with railings on cliff sections but requires moderate fitness (uneven terrain, stairs). Highlights: basalt cliff formations, tide pools (low tide), distant Mt. Fuji views (winter, clear days), and solitude (most tourists visit bridge only). Allow 90 min round-trip from bridge. Bring water (no vendors along trail).
