Kamiiso no Torii — Ocean Gate Sunrise
A single vermilion torii gate stands on a jagged rock platform where waves explode into white spray at high tide. Kamiiso no Torii marks the entrance to Oarai Isosaki Shrine, dedicated to the gods Onamuchi and Sukunahikona who legend says appeared here centuries ago. During low tide you can walk right up to the gate's concrete base, close enough to see salt crystals on the vermilion paint and barnacles clinging to the rocks.
Twice a year — around March 20 and September 15 — the sun rises directly through the gate's frame, and photographers arrive before dawn to stake positions along the concrete viewing platform. The alignment lasts about a week each time, though clouds and sea mist often obscure the shot. On clear mornings the sun appears first as a red ember on the horizon, then climbs into the torii's center while gulls circle overhead and waves crash below. The current gate dates from 1961, replacing the original destroyed by a typhoon. It's reinforced steel painted vermilion, built to handle 5-meter winter swells.
