Mount Tsukuba — Sacred Twin Peaks Cable Car

Mount Tsukuba is a twin-peaked mountain rising 877 meters from rice fields and suburban sprawl, visible from Tokyo on clear winter mornings 60 kilometers away. The two summits — Nantai-san (male peak, 871m) and Nyotai-san (female peak, 877m) — embody Izanagi and Izanami, the creator gods in Shinto mythology. Unlike the jagged Japan Alps, Tsukuba is rounded and forested, the kind of mountain you can hike in sneakers and reach by lunch.

Most people take the cable car from Tsukuba-san Shrine at the base — an 8-minute ride that climbs through oak and maple forest before emerging at a plaza with vending machines and a lookout deck. From there it's a 15-minute walk to Nantai-san for the 360-degree view: Kanto Plain spreading east in a checkerboard of towns and farms, Tokyo Skytree visible as a gray needle on hazy days, Mount Fuji floating white and alone to the southwest on winter mornings when pollution is low. Nyotai-san, the female peak, is quieter — a 10-minute ridge walk from Nantai-san, with its own small shrine and a slightly higher summit. In November the whole mountain turns red and orange, and on autumn and spring mornings fog sometimes fills the valley while the peaks stand clear above a white sea.
