Miyazaki · Kirishima Area
31.9272°N, 130.8636°E
The Kirishima volcanic plateau sits at 600–1,700 meters elevation, where two dozen active and dormant volcanoes have shaped a landscape of steaming fumaroles, acidic crater lakes, and mineral-rich springs. Seven distinct onsen zones scatter across the highlands, each fed by different volcanic sources producing waters that range from milky-white sulfur baths to iron-red acidic pools. The largest concentration centers around Maruo Onsen and Ebino Kogen, where traditional ryokan occupy forest clearings between hiking trails. Morning mist rolls through the valleys until 9am, and wild deer graze the highland meadows at dusk.
