Kotohira-gu Shrine (Konpira-san)

Perched majestically on the slopes of Mount Zozu, Kotohira-gu Shrine stands as one of Shikoku's most revered spiritual sites, requiring pilgrims to ascend 1,368 stone steps to reach the innermost shrine. Known affectionately as Konpira-san, this ancient shrine has protected seafarers and travelers for over a thousand years, drawing millions of visitors annually who make the challenging climb as both physical and spiritual journey. The approach begins at the base of the mountain in Kotohira town, where traditional shops sell walking sticks, refreshments, and votive offerings. The first 365 steps lead to the Daimon Gate, where most casual visitors pause to catch their breath and admire intricate wooden carvings. Continuing upward, you'll pass the Asahi-no-Yashiro shrine at 628 steps, where panoramic views of the Sanuki Plain begin to unfold. The main shrine complex at 785 steps features magnificent architecture including the Shoin hall with famous screen paintings by Maruyama Okyo. For those with energy remaining, the final ascent to Oku-sha inner shrine at step 1,368 offers profound solitude and spectacular mountain vistas. Throughout the climb, stone lanterns, smaller shrines, and seasonal flowers create moments of beauty and contemplation.
