Zentsuji Temple holds profound significance as the birthplace of Kobo Daishi, the revered monk who founded Shingon Buddhism and established the 88-temple pilgrimage circuit around Shikoku Island. As Temple Number 75 of the sacred pilgrimage, Zentsuji attracts both devout pilgrims and cultural visitors seeking to understand Japanese Buddhist heritage. The temple complex spreads across a vast area, divided into two main precincts showcasing different architectural periods and religious functions. The Eastern Precinct marks Kobo Daishi's actual birthplace, where a sacred camphor tree over 1,000 years old stands beside traditional temple buildings with sweeping curved roofs and intricate wooden carvings. The Western Precinct features the impressive five-story pagoda, one of the tallest wooden pagodas in Japan at 43 meters, its graceful proportions representing classical Buddhist architectural ideals. The temple grounds preserve numerous Important Cultural Properties including ancient sutras, religious artwork, and historical structures. One of the temple's most memorable experiences is the Kaidan Meguri, a dark corridor beneath the main hall where visitors navigate in complete darkness while maintaining contact with a handrail, symbolizing the journey to enlightenment through faith and trust.
