Lake Inawashiro — Mt. Bandai's Crystal Clear Mountain Lake

Lake Inawashiro (猪苗代湖) is Japan's fourth-largest lake, spanning 103 square kilometers at 514 meters elevation, famous for its exceptional water clarity (up to 10-meter visibility) that rivals ocean waters. Fed by underground springs from Mt. Bandai and surrounding volcanic peaks, the lake was historically acidic (around pH 5 in the early 20th century) but has since become neutral, supporting clear blue waters ideal for swimming, windsurfing, kayaking, and SUP (stand-up paddleboarding). The northern shore provides unobstructed views of Mt. Bandai (1,816m), whose volcanic cone reflects perfectly in calm morning waters, earning the lake its nickname 'Tenkyō-ko' (天鏡湖, 'Heavenly Mirror Lake').

The lake region offers year-round activities: summer water sports (July–August water temperature reaches 23°C), autumn foliage drives along the lakeside Bandai-Azuma Skyline (September–October), winter swan watching when thousands of whooper swans migrate from Siberia (November–March), and spring cherry blossoms at Kamihatoriko lakeside parks (late April). The Inawashiro volcanic rock bottom creates unique bathing conditions — the mineral-rich water is said to have beautifying properties, and lakeside onsen resorts combine bathing with panoramic mountain views.
