Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre — Kengo Kuma Architecture

The Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre (まつもと市民芸術館, opened 2004) is a striking contemporary building designed by architect Kengo Kuma, known for his use of natural materials and integration with surroundings. The center's exterior features layered wooden louvers and stone, echoing both traditional Japanese architecture and the surrounding mountain landscape. The design earned multiple architectural awards and is considered one of Kuma's early masterpieces.

The interior includes a 1,800-seat main hall, experimental theater, and gallery spaces hosting performances ranging from classical music to contemporary dance. Even if not attending a performance, architecture enthusiasts visit to photograph the building and explore the public lobby spaces. The center sits in a riverside park, and the building's reflection in the adjacent canal creates a photogenic scene.
