Momiji Manju — Miyajima's Maple Leaf-Shaped Sweet

Momiji manju (もみじ饅頭, 'maple leaf manju') is Hiroshima and Miyajima's iconic confection — small, maple leaf-shaped cakes with soft castella sponge exterior and sweet fillings, traditionally red bean paste (anko) but now available in custard cream, chocolate, matcha, cheese, and seasonal variations. The sweet was invented in the Meiji era (1906) on Miyajima Island, inspired by the island's famous autumn maple foliage (momiji), and quickly became the region's representative omiyage (souvenir). Freshly baked momiji manju, with a soft, pillowy texture and warm filling, far surpasses pre-packaged versions sold at train stations.

Miyajima's Omotesando shopping street is lined with momiji manju shops, many offering fresh-baked manju visible through storefront windows, and some provide unique variations like deep-fried momiji manju (age-momiji, 揚げもみじ) — battered and fried for a crispy exterior contrasting with molten filling. Major producers include Yamaichi (山一), Fujiya (藤い屋), and Nishikido (にしき堂), each with proprietary recipes and subtle differences in sweetness, batter thickness, and filling ratio. Beyond Miyajima, momiji manju is available throughout Hiroshima at train stations, souvenir shops, and department stores, making it the prefecture's most accessible and beloved sweet — a delicious, portable taste of Hiroshima's culinary identity.
