Mt. Fuji Yoshida Trail — Climbing Japan's Sacred Peak

The Yoshida Trail is the most popular of the four official Mt. Fuji climbing routes, accounting for over 60% of all summit attempts. The trail begins at the 5th Station (2,305m) — accessible by bus from Kawaguchiko Station — and climbs 1,471 vertical meters over 7.5km to the summit crater at 3,776m. The ascent typically requires 6–7 hours; the descent 3–4 hours. Most climbers follow the traditional pattern: start climbing in late afternoon, sleep 4–5 hours at a mountain hut between the 7th and 8th stations, then summit before dawn to witness sunrise (goraiko) from Japan's highest point.

The climbing season runs strictly July 1 to September 10, when mountain huts are staffed and trails maintained. Outside this window, conditions become dangerous due to snow, ice, and closed facilities. The Yoshida Trail passes through five climate zones — from subalpine forest to volcanic desert — and the summit views on clear days extend 100km in every direction, encompassing the Japan Alps, Pacific Ocean, and on exceptional days, even the curvature of the Earth.
