The phrase Niyodo Blue was coined by a photographer describing this specific pool. Nikobuchi is a plunge basin at the foot of a small waterfall on a tributary of the Niyodo river, and when light reaches it through the trees the water turns an intense saturated blue that photographs look manipulated. It is not manipulated; the colour comes from the clarity of the water and the depth of the basin.

It is also, in local belief, the dwelling of a serpent that is the incarnation of the water deity, and the basin is treated as a sacred place — entering the water and eating there are prohibited. You reach it by descending a steep stepped path from the road. The light window is narrow: roughly 11:00 to 15:00, and best from mid-August to mid-January when the sun angle reaches into the gorge.

Access Information

2976-11 Shimizu Kamibun, Ino, Agawa District. Car recommended. Free to visit. Nine roadside car parks are provided along the road, from about 50 m to 800 m from the descent point. The path down is steep steps. Entering the water and eating on site are prohibited. The colour is best between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and most reliably from mid-August to mid-January. **The window is four hours and seasonal.** Light reaches the basin roughly 11:00 to 15:00, and the sun angle works best from mid-August to mid-January. Outside that, the water is clear but not blue. **Avoid the middle of the day at weekends.** The car parks fill and the small basin gets crowded. Early in the light window on a weekday is the combination to aim for. **No swimming, no food.** This is a sacred site associated with a water deity, and both are explicitly prohibited. It is not a swimming hole regardless of what the photographs suggest. **The steps are steep and wet.** A proper descent on stepped rock with handrails in places. Shoes with grip. **Nine car parks, and the nearest is 50 metres.** They run up to 800 metres away along the road. Take whichever has space rather than circling.
